佛教自漢代傳入中國(guó),初期只被視作神仙道術(shù)的一種,流傳不廣。西晉以后,社會(huì)動(dòng)蕩,人民生活痛苦,為佛教的傳播提供了的寬廣的民間土壤。另一方面,匈奴、鮮卑、羯、氐、羌等少數(shù)民族入主中國(guó)北方,它們的文化傳統(tǒng)與來源于西域的佛教更易于相互認(rèn)同。因此,在南北朝時(shí)期佛教得以迅速生長(zhǎng),并滲透到社會(huì)各個(gè)階層。南北朝時(shí)期也是中國(guó)佛教藝術(shù)的輝煌時(shí)代,莫高窟、炳靈寺石窟、麥積山石窟等早期石窟寺開鑿于這一時(shí)代,現(xiàn)存佛教造像也始見于此時(shí)。

鎏金是自先秦時(shí)代即產(chǎn)生的傳統(tǒng)金屬裝飾工藝,至今仍在民間流行,亦稱“火鍍金”或“汞鍍金”,是把由金和水銀合成的金汞劑涂在銅器表層,加熱使水銀蒸發(fā),使金牢固地附在銅器表面不脫落的技術(shù)。中國(guó)的鎏金技術(shù)始于戰(zhàn)國(guó),漢代以后頗為流行,是當(dāng)時(shí)最值得稱道的銅器表面裝飾工藝之一,曾先后稱“黃金涂”“金黃涂”“金涂”“涂金”“鍍金”,宋代始稱“鎏金”。鎏金工藝是我國(guó)一種傳統(tǒng)的技術(shù)。
