[collection name]: Gold coins in the Qing Dynasty
Class: Coins
As the precious metal of Chinese coins, the shape of gold coins in the Qing Dynasty is close to the new type of coins, but the inscription on the coins still shows that they are not completely separated from the "balance currency" system. Because the pattern on the back is a flat dragon, it is commonly known as "dragon ocean". It is also a precious metal coin due to its small casting capacity. The imperial gold coins of the Qing Dynasty also bear the dual load of creating a currency and an era.
As early as the middle period of Guangxu, some officials in the Qing Dynasty proposed that China should exercise gold coins. For example, Chen Chi proposed in the general gold pound theory that "to gain profit and to develop business, it is not necessary to cast money, but the weight of money, not to imitate the gold pound". In 1904, the household of Guangxu raised money to cast gold coins, which was specially issued to the court In August 1905, the Ministry of Finance reported that Tianjin factory started to make copper coins in June. In the next year, the "Qing gold coin" was tried to be cast. The emperor's name and the "year of Guangxu Bingwu" were added to the coin, and the gold coin of the year of Dingwei was cast the next year. However, the gold reserve is insufficient. In 1910, the Qing government issued the "rules of currency system", which formally adopted the "silver standard system" with "Yuan" as the monetary unit.
In April 1903 (March 29, Guangxu's reign), the Qing government issued a decree to "set up a general foundry of silver and money in the capital", and then changed Tianjin to take water and coal into consideration when the machine was running. In August 1905, the Ministry of Finance reported that Tianjin factory started production of copper coins in June. The next year (1906, the 32nd year of Guangxu) tried to cast "gold coins of the Qing Dynasty", with Emperor's name and "made in Bingwu year of Guangxu" added on the coins, and the gold coins of the second year (1907) were cast again.
The basic shape design is ring shaped money. It was probably in Jiaqing of Qing Dynasty that the silver coins imitated the new silver yuan. So far, in our country, the system management of weighing and measuring the loan coins has the current method. The gold coin of the year of Ding Wei in Guangxu has inscriptions and samples on both sides. There are double lines on the back and double beads on the inner ring. At the top, the characters "Guangxu Ding Wei Nian Zao" were cast on the right, and at the bottom, the characters "Kuping one or two" were read on the right. Inside the bead circle, read the character font of "Qing Dynasty gold coin" in regular script directly. On the back of the coin, there is a golden dragon with five claws on the back. The Ruixiang cloud is around the area. There are two on the outside, fine lines on both sides, and a bead circle on the inside. The product design of Qing Dynasty gold coin is close to the new type of copper coin, but the inscription on the surface of the coin still shows that the management of "weighing and lending" system has not been completely solved.
This is the first and only gold coin made in the name of the central government in China. Later, due to the lack of gold in the Qing government and the absence of the gold standard system, it was not issued, and only the sample coins survived. This gold coin is not only a famous and well-known collection of modern mechanism coins, but also a precious physical remains reflecting the financial and monetary reform in the late Qing Dynasty.
