明代是以漢族統治中國,在奪取蒙古族的政權之后,提出了“恢復中華”,亦即恢復漢民族的文化傳統。這樣,也促進了造型藝術之一的雕塑的發展。但是在唐末五代和宋代已經形成的向往盛唐和學習盛唐的社會傾向,明代仍然繼續,并且由學習盛唐降格為學習唐、宋。我們從現存的很多制作中,也可以證明這一事實。

中國古代工匠創作了數以萬計的各種不同類型的石雕獅子,分站式和蹬坐兩大類,早其形狀多兇猛異常、宋以后獅子形態溫馴,有些造型類似寵物狗。上古時代的獅子大多類似于獅虎之間。《爾雅》中載:獅子是“狻猊”,《穆天子傳》說“狻猊”日走五百里。我國古代沒有獅子,獅子都是從西域不遠萬里進貢而來,到達中原十分不易,獅子性猛且脾氣暴烈,喜熱帶非洲草原,在我國不易豢養,顯得十分珍貴,因而被皇室豢養在深宮大內,普通老百姓很難見到。

在古代,民間雕匠對獅子的形象認識非常模糊,大都是根據伺養人口授和工匠自己通過想象創造出來的一種半獅半虎的動物。

由于獅子性猛兇狠的特點,漢魏以來常被視著驅逐精怪的瑞獸而被皇室用用于宮殿鎮宅,也置放于陵寢以保護墓主。到了唐宋以后,民間百姓對獅子的喜愛程度更是家喻戶曉,大門兩旁分別配置石獅,門前拴馬樁上雕石獅,坑頭或席鎮無不以獅子為籃本雕刻出千姿百態,大小不等的各類不同風格的獅子。

此件石雕獅子,尺寸雖小,但造型強捍兇猛,鬣毛線條雕刻流暢自如。這一類小形石獅大多是古人用于置放案頭把玩或作為坑頭席鎮之用。
