繡工簡單,顏色單調(diào),只用套針和斜纏針兩種針法,但作者運用套針一批套一批的特點,將黃、橘、黑綠、褐白、等色巧妙地融入繡線的絲理中,似清代畫家華喦兼工帶寫的“小寫意”金魚。金魚身上繡出的斑點和尾部,即融進率意瀟灑的水墨技巧,似干濕筆并用,這種繡法既有細節(jié)描寫,又不失筆墨的簡逸,是華喦捕捉自然生物中的天趣所創(chuàng)造出的生動多姿形象的模式,勾勒、沒骨、設(shè)色、水墨兼而并用。此繡畫是為民國時期的織繡精品。
