1912年4月袁世凱出任大總統。北洋政府鑒于當時鑄幣、紙幣十分復雜，流通的中外貨幣在百種以上，規格不一，流通混亂，折算繁瑣，民眾積怨，同時也想借助貨幣改制以解決軍費問題，便決定鑄發國幣。袁世凱為了提高自己的統治地位，趁機把他的頭像鑄于幣面，“袁大頭”由此而來.“袁大頭”首次的鑄造時間是民國三年，而且該幣被定為中華民國國幣，因此，它在我國的錢幣史上具有非常重要的地位。

此枚中華民國三年袁大頭試鑄幣正面為袁世凱半身側面戎裝像，上列“中華民國三年”六字，幣面干凈，錢文清晰，字體端莊工整，筆畫剛勁有力。錢幣背面圖案為兩條嘉禾左右交互，下系結帶，嘉禾紋清晰細膩，粗細分明，層次感強；中央為“壹圓”幣值字樣，外環為直齒邊。此枚錢幣包漿自然渾厚，雕工精美，紋飾線條粗細均勻，流暢自然，字體端正工整，清秀俊逸，可見匠師的雕刻工藝十分高超。所以試鑄幣是當世的完成品樣品，是后續鑄銀幣的對照品，此幣色澤光鮮，品相優異，包漿自然，紋飾深淺適度，具有極高的藝術鑒賞和收藏價值。
