咸豐錢幣的發行是當時清政府財政最為混亂的時期，還受到了鴉片戰爭的影響，在這樣的背景之下清政府為了緩解自己的財政壓力發行了很多版本咸豐錢幣，當咸豐初期，在太平天國的打擊下，清政府財政極端困難，遂行大錢，自此錢法大亂。《光緒順天府志》載：“咸豐三年，軍旅數起，餉需支拙，東南道路梗阻，滇銅不至，刑部尚書周祖培，大理寺卿恒春，御史蔡紹洛先后條陳錢法，請改鑄大錢，以充度支”。《東華錄》則載：“當五百與當千大錢于咸豐四年二月始鑄，然大錢一出，盜鑄蜂起，雖禁以棄市之律，不能止，不得不逐步停鑄，乃于同年七月即停鑄收回當五百當千大錢，并不能行用矣”。接著當百當五十大錢亦因民間通行不暢，貶值嚴重而減少鑄額。咸豐大錢版式紛雜而鑄額不多，是故其大錢，母錢及樣錢，均為極難得之物。
