[introduction to collection]: silver ingot is one of the basic currencies in ancient times. In Chinese history, the monetary function of silver began before Han Dynasty. It was called "silver cake" before Sui and Tang Dynasties, called "silver ingot" during song and Jin Dynasties, and called "Yuanbao" in Yuan Dynasty. As the main currency in Ming and Qing Dynasties, silver was cast in many ways. Today, most of the silver ingots we see are preserved in the Ming and Qing Dynasties and the early Republic of China. However, due to the control of the precious metal circulation market in modern times and the implementation of "Abolishing the two elements and changing the yuan" in the early Republic of China, the circulation of silver ingots was stopped and a large number of silver ingots were sold. At present, there is not a large number of people in the world and there is great potential for appreciation. There are many kinds of silver ingots in Qing Dynasty. Each region has its own representative shape. In general, there are Yuanbao shape, round shape, rectangle shape, weight shape, waist shape, arch shape, etc. There are four kinds: one is Baoyin, which is horseshoe shaped; the other is Zhongding, which is hammer shaped, also known as xiaoyuanbao; The third kind is Xiaozhuo or Zhuzi, which is shaped like steamed bread, also known as Xiaoding; The fourth is less than one or two pieces of silver, there are drops, beads and other titles.
Silver ingots take "Liang" as a unit, collectively known as "yinliang". Of course, the "two" here are not necessarily equal in weight, and the fineness of silver is also different. Therefore, in addition to "silver", there is a more elegant and standard word "grain silver". We can usually hear it in court plays of the Qing Dynasty. This is the official name of Zuyin in the Qing Dynasty, and it is the legal standard of silver in the Qing Dynasty. Grain and other payments are based on grain silver, which is equivalent to the present "925" thousand grain silver. Of course, the smelting level at that time, even grain silver, is very high, There are still some errors from qianzuyin. Therefore, the grain silver is not the real silver, but a monetary unit used to convert various kinds of metal silver, that is, virtual silver, also known as "foot grain". There are different shapes and standards in different places.
Inscriptions refer to the characters cast and engraved on the ingot when casting silver ingots. The contents are generally about the casting time, place, purpose, quality, official or craftsman's name, etc. These inscriptions not only bear the burden of economic circulation, but also contain rich historical value.
