辛亥革命之后民國成立，全國處于百廢待興的狀態(tài)，為了能夠令經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展得以恢復(fù)和解決軍費(fèi)以及提高個(gè)人政治地位，袁世凱即位后，令政府發(fā)行了銀元貨幣，對當(dāng)時(shí)經(jīng)濟(jì)的恢復(fù)起了很大的作用。因銀元鑄有他的側(cè)身圖像，故此又稱“袁大頭”。

民國三年版正面為袁世凱側(cè)面像，上列“中華民國三年”。“年”字后沒有“造”字，其他年版都在“年”字后面有一“造”字。三年版“民”字中有一“點(diǎn)”，而其他年版民字無“點(diǎn)”。錢幣形制規(guī)整，十分精致美觀。
