圖中所示《群蝦圖》是齊白石其中最為著名的畫作之一，被譽為國畫中的傳世珍品。這幅作品中共有十只蝦，在水中活潑、靈敏、機警地游動著，很有生命力，蝦的觸須密密麻麻重疊在一起，形象逼真躍然紙上。

李苦禪曾說：“白石翁畫蝦，乃河蝦與對蝦二者的‘合象’”。 葉淺予評到：蝦的精神狀態，蝦的有彈力的透明體，蝦在水中浮游的動勢。把藝術造型的“形”、“質”、“動”三個要素完滿的表現出來，這樣豐富的內容，齊白石先生用的是極簡練的筆墨，不能多一筆，也不能少一筆，一筆一筆可以數得出來。

齊白石曾貼出潤格：“白石畫蝦，十兩一只。畫蝦一只，索價紋銀十兩”。如此價格足見其技藝之精，盡管價錢昂貴，登門求蝦者仍然不少。一位富人見了畫價，心中盤算一翻，于是，以白銀35兩向他購畫，他洋洋自得，以為必有賺頭，已付紋銀35兩，總得畫四只蝦吧？次日，畫家作品已成，富人展卷一瞧：“畫上只有三只蝦？不對呀，那多余的5兩白銀豈不白送了！”富人正待開言，仔細一看，發現還有半只蝦隱身于水草之中，只見一截蝦尾。

這一故事也許只是街頭的傳聞，但故事的背后說明了一個畫理，也道出了中國畫的“意味”。白石老人所創造的蝦，其實并不存在于自然界中，但在符合蝦的共性前提下鬼斧神工地將他的“妙在似與不似之間” 的理念演繹到了極致。
