辛亥革命之后民國(guó)成立，全國(guó)處于百?gòu)U待興的狀態(tài)，為了能夠令經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展得以恢復(fù)和解決軍費(fèi)以及提高個(gè)人政治地位，袁世凱即位后，令政府發(fā)行了銀元貨幣，對(duì)當(dāng)時(shí)經(jīng)濟(jì)的恢復(fù)起了很大的作用。因銀元鑄有他的側(cè)身圖像，故此又稱(chēng)“袁大頭”。
