碳質球粒隕石是一種較為少的隕石品種,大部分碳質球粒隕石的顏色較深,他們的熔殼呈深灰色至黑色,它們的內部同樣呈黑色,整體有點像木炭的黑。碳質球粒隕石的這一區別其它隕石的色澤,讓人們很容易認為碳質球粒隕石是由碳組成,就連沒深入研究過它們的研究員們,最開始也以為碳質球粒隕石含有大量的碳,而事實證明并非如此,碳的含量并不是碳質球粒隕石的識別特征,而它們的鎂、鈣、鋁相對于硅的豐度成為了區別普通球粒隕石的關鍵。

類似球粒的“難熔包體”與球粒的區別是:難熔包體是由高溫難熔礦物(如尖晶石、黃長石、透輝石、鈣長石)等礦物組成,而常規球粒主要是由橄欖石和輝石組成。
