碳質球粒隕石是一種較為少的隕石品種，大部分碳質球粒隕石的顏色較深，他們的熔殼呈深灰色至黑色，它們的內部同樣呈黑色，整體有點像木炭的黑。碳質球粒隕石的這一區別其它隕石的色澤，讓人們很容易認為碳質球粒隕石是由碳組成，就連沒深入研究過它們的研究員們，最開始也以為碳質球粒隕石含有大量的碳，而事實證明并非如此，碳的含量并不是碳質球粒隕石的識別特征，而它們的鎂、鈣、鋁相對于硅的豐度成為了區別普通球粒隕石的關鍵。
