慈禧在晚清歷史中有著濃墨重彩的一筆，作為一個頗具野心的女人，她并不甘心于做一個普通的母親或是皇太后。因此才有咸豐帝駕崩后的：辛酉政變。政變之后帶來的是無上的榮耀和權臣的擁護，形成后來“二宮垂簾，親王議政”的格局。同治重寶的出現，就是慈禧真正掌握大權的開始。

同治重寶鑄造于清同治年間，此時的咸豐皇帝已經駕崩，其兒子載淳即將繼位，然而在其母后的壓迫下，原本擬定的祺祥錢并沒有流通開來。而另一種錢幣，就要在一個女人的野心中出現了。咸豐十一年九月，慈禧發動了辛酉政變，且提出了“同治”的這個年號。這就是同治錢的初擬。
“同治”意味共同治理，這里暗喻的不是慈禧與皇帝共同治理國家，而是其自身與尊皇后鈕祜祿氏一同瓜分，清朝的執政大權。這個完美的提議不僅得到當事人的認可，且內閣大臣們與朝廷重臣也都順勢而為。因此同治重寶的鑄造就是在這樣一段頗具野心的歷史下面世的。
