清咸豐年間(1851-1861年)，太平天國農民起義開展迅猛，并在江蘇南京建都，此刻清政府賴以鑄錢之用的滇銅，因路途阻斷而無法運進北京。一方面是打壓起義急需許多的軍餉開支，一方面是鑄錢的原材料告缺，給清政府造成了嚴峻的財務困難，最終迫使清政府自咸豐三年開端發行紙幣和改鑄大錢來補償財務虧空。咸豐朝寶昌局所鑄錢有“當百”、“當二百”、“當三百”、“當五百”、“當千”等五種面值。

咸豐大錢就是在這樣的大背景下產生的。咸豐元寶當千錢幣是這些重鑄的大錢里面面值最高的品種，但是如今的存世的量十分稀少。該枚咸豐元寶當千，重79.85克，直徑5.8cm 厚0.4cm，銘文字體雕刻得精致而又清晰，錢幣表面則清秀俊朗，刻著“咸豐元寶”四個字，背穿上下“當千”，左右滿文雕刻寶局名，“寶昌”兩字橫排。再讀錢文，可見無論面文還是背文，其楷書書意皆為端莊正點，筆劃有力，筆鋒鮮明，布局協調規范，寶昌局鑄品之書意神韻昭然，歷史過渡性自然，而且是寶昌局稀罕版本鳳尾昌，為錢幣珍品。形制規整，大小合適，包漿老道，銹色自然，歲月流痕鮮明，流通使用痕跡明顯，銅質精巧。其傳世品質色品貌一目了然矣。由于咸豐元寶當前錢幣流傳下來的不多，存世的十分稀少，所以該錢幣是十分珍貴的，很值得收藏。
