袁大頭是民國時期主要流通貨幣之一，“袁大頭”是對袁世凱像系列硬幣的口語俗稱，嚴謹點說叫“袁世凱像背嘉禾銀幣”。辛亥革命以后，袁世凱就任“臨時蘢芡場敝職，后又成為正式大總統(tǒng)。當(dāng)時，為了鞏固國內(nèi)政局穩(wěn)定，發(fā)展民族經(jīng)濟，也為“制憲”和“稱帝”作準(zhǔn)備，于是發(fā)布《國幣條例》，毅然決定在全國“統(tǒng)一幣制”。
