公元1100年1月，北宋皇帝哲宗病故，由其弟趙佶接替做了北宋第八任皇帝，為宋徽宗。徽宗“性甚機巧，優于技藝”，他在位25年，先后鑄造了圣宋通寶、崇寧通寶（重寶）、大觀通寶、政和通寶（重寶）、重和通寶、宣和通寶（元寶）等6種錢幣，其中崇寧通寶（重寶）和大觀通寶的錢文是徽宗親書的瘦金體。令人叫絕的是崇寧重寶，青銅精制，文字骨秀格清，惹得眾多古錢幣收藏者愛不忍釋。

此枚崇寧重寶，直徑3.5cm，重：12.2g。系北宋徽宗崇寧年間鑄(公元1102年-1106年)，銅幣正面鐫刻著“崇寧重寶”，字體為隸書，端莊雄秀，古樸方正，嚴謹莊重，法度固定，字里行間留在錢幣上的，是腐蝕錢幣的鐵銹;銅幣背面則沒有印制任何的字體。錢幣的中央部分，是打孔的正方形圖案，方正大方，落落得體，輪廓立體，這種錢幣鑄造形狀便于老百姓將其串起來掛在身上，不易丟失。該銅幣整體制作精良，版面清晰秀美，文字方正，保存良好，在經過時間的洗禮，歲月的沖刷后成古銅色，包漿自然，字里行間留在錢幣上的，是腐蝕錢幣的銹跡，讓人一看就知道它的歷史年頭。

崇寧重寶除了火法冶煉之外還有“膽水治銅法”。這種冶銅法就是利用金屬鐵從含有銅化合物的溶液中置換出銅來，然后把它刮取下來，再經烹煉后，就可以得到銅錠。所謂“膽水”是指天然的含硫酸銅(俗稱它為實膽、膽礬)的泉水。它的形成是因為天然的硫化銅礦石經風化氧化，一部分便會生成可溶性硫酸銅，經過地下水、雨水的浸泡、淋洗，便會溶解而匯入泉水中。這種膽水必須要銅的濃度足夠大，才可以為水法冶銅的原料。故當時鑄造難度十分艱難，藏品價值十分巨大，歷史意義紀念價值非常高。
