“咸豐”是清文宗的年號(hào),咸豐年間正值太平天國革命運(yùn)動(dòng)的高潮時(shí)期。此時(shí)民怨沸騰,清政府為了茍延殘喘,在錢幣鑄行上大做文章,將財(cái)政危機(jī)轉(zhuǎn)嫁到老百姓身上。相繼推出“咸豐通寶”、“咸豐重寶”、“咸豐元寶”種類繁多的錢幣。咸豐元年首先準(zhǔn)備開鑄“咸豐通寶”制錢。由于鴉片戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)、列強(qiáng)的掠奪和太平天國革命運(yùn)動(dòng)的發(fā)生,錢局鑄造制錢已很難正常進(jìn)行,很多省錢局實(shí)際上處于停頓狀態(tài),即使開鑄,也是偷工減料 。因而造成咸豐通寶制錢精好者少 ,而粗制濫造的多,大都質(zhì)劣而輕小,或造成鐵錢、鉛錢代替銅錢。咸豐錢幣是清代錢幣乃至于在所有錢幣中占有一席之地。它的工藝達(dá)到一個(gè)爐火純青的境界。
