曼生茗壺,制壺與玩壺者無不熟悉,陳曼生對宜興陶業的振興有著非常大的貢獻,“曼生十八式”是對陳曼生所設計作品的統稱,然并非他所設計的作品就只有十八種樣式。

當年陳曼生確實有手繪一批紫砂壺樣式,但數字一定不是十八式,可能超過十八,后世人之所以用十八這個數字,僅僅是習慣而已,也許是人到十八歲就表示進入了成年,也許是中國受佛教影響比較大,人們就常用十八來象征完善,、成熟或極致。蓮花是佛教中常見的花卉,菩薩均端坐在蓮花形坐上,蓮花是十八瓣,佛祖釋迦牟尼兩旁邊有十八羅漢。世人說曼生壺十八式也是這個意思。

曼生是一位在書畫、金石、文學上有相當影響力的人物,他的篆刻被后世尊為“西冷八家”之一,在藝術創作上,主張“詩文書畫,不必十分到家,乃時見天趣”,從中可以看出他的藝術審美觀。在溧陽為官期間(嘉慶二十一年前后),當時文壇名流麋鹿集,他結識了宜興的制壺名手楊彭年、楊寶年、楊風年兄妹,對紫砂壺產生濃厚興趣,創制茗壺造型十八式,每式都撰擬題銘,分別書寫,由楊氏兄妹加制,曼生在壺上題銘書刻,這些加工制作的茗壺正契合了中國文人雅士在美學上追求幽野之趣的理念,在當時極受文人雅士的喜愛,故稱之為“曼生壺”,這就是“曼生十八式”的由來。此藏品是非常值得鑒賞的,也是很多愛壺之人都想收藏的。
Manson was an influential figure in calligraphy, painting, epigraphy and literature. His seal cutting was honored by later generations as one of the eight "Xileng schools" . In his artistic creation, he advocated that "poetry, calligraphy and painting do not have to be very home, but see the beauty of heaven all the time" , from which we can see his artistic aesthetic. When he was an official in Liyang (around the year of Jiaqing twenty-one) , he became acquainted with Yang Pengnian, Yang Baonian and Yang Fengnian, who were famous potters in Yixing. He developed a keen interest in purple clay teapots and created the eighteen styles of tea pots, each style is inscribed with inscriptions, written separately and added by the Yang brothers and sisters, and inscribed on the pots by Manson. These carved Ming pots are in line with the Chinese literati's idea of pursuing the beauty of solitude and wilderness in aesthetics, at that time by the literati favorite, it is called "Mansheng Pot" , which is "Mansheng 18" origin. This collection is very worthy of appreciation, but also a lot of love pot people want to collect.
