淳化元寶于北宋太宗淳化元年（公元990年）開始鑄造，相傳錢文為宋太宗趙光義手書，即所謂的“御書體”。錢面順時針旋讀，錢背一般為光背，但在1988年春，我國發現了錢背為佛像的特殊“淳化元寶”。淳化元寶發行的時候，正值北宋逐步穩定，國力走強之時，淳化元寶因此比較稀少，宋太宗淳化初年，太宗深感江山不穩，尤其當時宋與遼金沙灘大敗。他親自督工鑄造該錢幣并送至五臺山窖藏，希望保佑大宋國泰民安，帝業萬代不斷。

此枚錢幣直徑：2.4cm。錢幣外圓內方，左右各鑄有佛像。錢幣正面刻書“淳化元寶”四字，筆法雋永流連，十分灑脫。錢背造像的解說向來多有紛紜，坐像多認系觀音，立像則有善財童子及韋馱等說。錢幣背面佛像神態逼真，栩栩如生。右邊為手持蓮花，坐于蓮花寶座之上的觀音菩薩，寶座底下祥云纏繞。左邊為頭上結發，雙手合十，身體微向右側站立，在蓮花瓣座上的善財童子，當為一幅童子拜觀童的畫面。淳化元寶背面所鑄的兩尊佛像，均有蓮花寶座和祥云依托，充分突顯出宋朝對佛教的重視，對佛教的信奉自古至今都存在，敬仰佛祖，教人慈愛善良，這是值得收藏的原因之一。另外，銅錢上的圖案，不僅是“淳化元寶”四個字，更是錢幣背面的佛像都雕刻的神態自如、線條流暢自然、清晰莊嚴，栩栩如生，可以看出當時年代的金屬雕刻工藝水平.
