If the ceramic body and glaze are not properly designed in the formula and firing, the difference of expansion coefficient between them is too large, which often leads to glaze cracks. However, the glaze crack is deliberately caused, which has a special flavor. In ceramic art, we call it ice crack glaze. As early as the Song Dynasty, Zhejiang Longquan kiln (GE kiln), as one of the five famous kilns in Song Dynasty, produced cracked patterns on its glaze (usually called "kaipian"), which is the unique decorative style of Longquan Ge kiln products, and the celadon ware with cracks produced by it is precious in the world. The cracks on the glaze surface of Ge kiln products are actually a kind of defect, but they are skillfully used as decorative patterns by porcelain craftsmen, and the effect is unique and exquisite, as if it were formed by nature. According to historical records, "ice crack" ranks first among all kinds of patterns of Longquan Ge kiln products, known as "ice crack is the top".
"Ice crack glaze" is different from cracked glaze in that the former is multi-level crack, while the latter is single-layer. Due to the technical difficulty of "multi-level crack", it can be imagined that the crack is of great difficulty. The biggest characteristic of "ice crack glaze" lies in the multi-level three-dimensional structure cracks, resulting in a rose petal like layer. In addition, the change of glaze color makes people fondle to see through Fang Xiu. The ice crack glaze appeared in the Song Dynasty official glaze, Ge glaze, Ru glaze, Longquan glaze and so on. The praise for the ice crack glaze is endless. In Tao ya, it is said that "the official kilns of Song Dynasty are never seen, and the people in the world seldom know it." On the premise of praising the official kilns of the Song Dynasty, the ice cracked glaze has the reputation of "Ge kiln character, the pattern is based on the ice crack". It can be seen that the ice crack glaze plays an important role in the porcelain and will naturally be treated as a rare treasure.
