玉扳指，又叫玉諜，本意是拉弓射箭時扣弦用的一種工具，套在射手右手拇指上，以保護射手右拇指不被弓弦勒傷的專用器物。原屬于滿族特有的首飾--扳指與戒指，雖非九鼎大呂，但就其淵源與文化微妙論，則頗值得涵泳玩味,后來引申為能夠決斷事務，具有身份和能力的象征,由于滿漢兩族廣大男士的欣羨與效顰，竟使之成為一種極為時髦的佩飾品，上自皇帝與王公大臣，下至滿漢各旗子弟皆喜佩戴。

早在新石器時代晚期、商周時期就發現有扳指的存在了，最初可能有皮質等一些較軟材料制成的扳指，好一點的才會使用材質更為堅硬的。隨著年代的變更以及逐漸演化，玉扳指的材料和形制在各個朝代有所不同，譬如商代的玉扳指還有拉弓護指的功能，不僅較后來的扳指更長，而且其上有槽痕;到了戰國就開始變短;漢代的扳指出現玉片形狀，類似于玉佩，帶有用來拉弦的小鉤，但這個時候的扳指已經不能承受拉弓那么大的力量了;宋代出現了一些仿漢代的扳指，其樣式更是多種多樣，有片狀的，也有矮筒狀的;時至清代，扳指呈圓筒狀，一端邊緣往里凹，一端邊沿向前凸，因為其材質更加圓潤、光滑，所以更加難以用來射箭，而成為一種裝飾、身份以及流行趨勢的象征。
