在中國印石界，“南血北地”之名早已流行至盛。“南血”指昌化雞血，“北地”指巴林雞血，它們是目前世界兩大最著名的雞血石品種，是公認最美的兩朵“嬌艷之花”。巴林雞血石是約1.3億年前的晚侏羅紀時期火山爆發時，因朱砂（硫化汞）滲透到高嶺石中、地開石之中共生、交融而緩慢形成的，是極為罕見的天然寶玉石。巴林雞血的開采應用歷史，可追溯至距今5000-6000前的紅山文化時期，但原始社會生產力低下，都是地表揀拾而得。20世紀，在昌化雞血石遭遇“煉汞浩劫”之前，巴林雞血曾在日軍侵華時期遭遇“強盜洗劫”。直到1973年，巴林石礦才在周恩來總理的關懷下，正式建礦，恢復開采。至今，已整整44個年頭。
