北宋徽宗趙佶作為一個(gè)皇帝，怠于政治，聽信奸佞，他任用蔡京、童貫等奸佞之輩主持朝政。宋徽宗本人信奉道教，大造廟宇，自稱教主道君皇帝。此外他還大肆搜刮民財(cái)，極盡侈靡，最后國(guó)庫(kù)空虛。至金兵南下時(shí)，北宋幾乎無抵抗之力，他本人也被俘去，并憂死異鄉(xiāng)了。

但在另一方面，在文化、藝術(shù)等領(lǐng)域里，徽宗曾做出過重要貢獻(xiàn)。在貨幣文化的創(chuàng)新上，他也身體力行，不遺余力。人們常說，書法在運(yùn)用上有三難：篆刻難，書匾難，制錢文難。此三難中方印、書匾還比較容易，而在圓錢上鑄字則要難得多了。但是宋徽宗趙佶卻“因難見巧”，在錢幣的方寸之間把他自創(chuàng)的“瘦金書”發(fā)揮得淋漓盡致，從而把書法藝術(shù)推上了峰巔。趙佶的書法初學(xué)黃庭堅(jiān)、薛稷和褚遂良，后自成一體，被稱為“瘦金體”，鐵畫銀鉤勁瘦淡雅，風(fēng)韻別致，堪稱一絕。

而大觀通寶錢則是徽宗書法藝術(shù)的代表作，其中行書大觀小平鐵母瘦金體特型出號(hào)大觀。這兩種錢都是珍稀之品。大觀通寶錢是徽宗大觀年間鑄造的，相傳崇寧五年（公元1106年）年末，當(dāng)時(shí)有人夜觀星象時(shí)忽然發(fā)現(xiàn)彗星閃過，嘆為觀止，徽宗認(rèn)為是吉祥之兆，故而改元。改崇寧六年（公元1107年）為大觀元年，再而鑄錢。
