水沖石以產于湘西吉首市仙鎮營北二、三里的水沖灣而得名。用它制成的硯臺稱“水沖石硯”或“水沖硯”。據清光緒年間編修的《乾州廳志》卷十三“物產”記載，水沖石硯“色淡青，堅嫩發墨，質微黃，而花紋間有山水草木之狀。
