在中國貨幣史中，自明末至清、民年間，即十六世紀末至二十世紀初葉，伴隨日益擴大的中外貿(mào)易，先是以銀元為代表的外國貨幣紛紛涌向中國，從流通于東南一隅到席卷中國全境，從中外貿(mào)易的支付手段躍為中國貨幣的主流形式，對明末清初的中國社會帶來了前所未有的沖擊，直至清光緒時期才自鑄各種銀元與之抗衡，但是終究不能抵御外國銀洋的陸續(xù)涌入，實際上自清嘉慶以后至民國時期，外國銀幣牢牢控制著中國的貨幣流通市場。
