光緒元寶是清朝光緒年間流通的貨幣之一。由湖北兩廣總督張之洞率先引進英國鑄幣機器鑄造銀元和銅元，之后各省紛紛仿效。共有十九個省局鑄造，除中央戶部，地方省所鑄銅元，皆在其正面上緣鐫寫省名。
光緒元寶是大清光緒年流通大面值貨幣之首，是我國首批引進海外技術的印發流通貨幣，對于現今也蘊藏了一定歷史意義。廣東省造光緒元寶在中國近代機器鑄幣史上屬一個大系列，其鑄期歷時甚長(從光緒22年-光緒34年[1896至1908年])，歷經十余載，

清末銅價劇漲，民間毀錢為銅，以獲數倍之利，市面出現錢荒。廣東因停鑄制錢，市面制錢日乏，小額流通十分不便。為救錢荒，同時受香港銅元及外幣影響，光緒26年6月，兩廣總督德壽與前總督李鴻章奏準廣東仿香港銅仙鑄造機制銅元。故清代機制銅元的鑄造由廣東伊始。繼而福建、江蘇、四川等省相繼仿鑄銅元。以紅銅95%、白鉛4%、錫1% 配合，每枚重二錢，當制錢十文。正面中央為“光緒元寶”及滿文“寶廣”，外環珠圈，上緣紀地文字為“湖北省造”。下緣紀值文字為“當十”;背面中央鑄“飛龍”圖及珠圈，上緣英文紀地“KWANGTUNG”，下緣英文紀值“ONECENT”。

由于機制銅元較之方孔銅錢鑄造精良，市商樂用，流通順暢。次年，政府即諭令沿江沿海各省準許仿鑄。爾后，全國各地紛紛開機鑄造銅元。故當十銅元鑄造地各異，這是區分不同當十銅元的最明顯特征。
