所謂法帖，就是傳統法式，將古代著名書法家的墨跡經雙鉤描摹后，刻在石板或木板上，再拓印裝訂成帖。

懷素（725—799）僧，長沙人。俗姓錢，字藏真，號筆冢，世稱僧懷素，素師、釋懷素、沙門懷素。與張旭、顏真卿、徐浩、鄔彤（懷素表叔）齊名。唐代杰出書法家，擅狂草，對我國書法藝術史上由“篆草、章草、今（行）草”過渡到狂草，做出了巨大的貢獻。他自幼出家，曾為玄奘、三藏法師門人，坐禪之余，常書，衣服、墻壁、器物，無不當紙，甚至用芭蕉習字，并名居室曰“緣天庵”。他還把不能用的筆埋在山下，名曰“筆冢”。懷素千字文有多種，而以“小字貞元本”為最佳，人譽為“一字值千金”，遂被稱為“千金帖”。

此貼為懷素晚年所書，全帖無自敘帖之縱放奇趣，不顛不狂，不急不躁，氣調尤為清逸，且中規中矩，字體大小一致。初看似漫不經心，實則筆筆合于法度，脫去狂怪怒張，專尚平淡古雅，字與字不相連屬，筆道更加蒼勁渾樸。反映了懷素藝術創作上的另一種追求。當為絢爛之極而復歸平淡之作，故歷來為書林所重。明莫如中說：“懷素絹本千字文真跡，其點畫變態，意匠縱橫，初若漫不經思，而動遵型范，契合化工，有不可名言其妙者”。

此書平淡閑雅，筆墨意趣老辣稚拙，為其晚年代表作。此帖明代為文征明所藏，清末為六舟僧達受所藏，又歸徐少圃收藏，能保存下來的更是少之又少，具有一定的收藏價值及投資價值，值得藏家傾情收藏。
