唐以前的貨幣差不多都以重量為名稱。唐高祖李淵武德四年(621年)始鑄"開元通寶"，標志了銖兩貨幣體系的終結和寶文錢制的建立。"開元通寶"錢以"文"為單位，大小大體仿漢五銖，錢徑八分，重二銖四，每十文重一兩。這是中國衡法兩以下改為十進位的開始。"開元通寶"錢文傳由歐陽詢所書。為何取名為開元?開元就是開創(chuàng)新紀元的意思，體現出唐朝包羅萬象，恢弘大氣，奮發(fā)進取的精神。開元通寶四個字也由歐陽詢題寫。
