抽煙的習慣在中國歷時已久，中國人最早的吸煙方式是抽旱煙，把煙絲裝入煙鍋點燃后，通過連接煙鍋和煙嘴的中空管子以吸其煙。明末至清代中期，這種方式流傳最廣，有些上等的煙具則是一種身份地位的象征。
