“袁大頭”，是對鑄造于民國初年鐫有袁世凱側面頭像壹圓銀幣的一種俗稱。因其首鑄于民國三年，又有稱“民三”者，此類別稱由來已久。作為民國軍閥銀幣的領頭羊，“大頭”系列對錢幣收藏愛好者來說，并不陌生。“袁大頭”銀元的誕生，也是銀元發展的必然結果。在辛亥革命后，袁世凱為了解決軍費和提高個人政治地位而發行的銀元貨幣，因這些銀元鑄有他的側身圖像而得名。
