光緒元寶是大清光緒年流通大面值貨幣之首，是我國首批引進海外技術的印發流通貨幣，對于現今也蘊藏了一定歷史意義。金是自先秦時代即產生的傳統金屬裝飾工藝，是一種傳統的做法，稱火鍍金或汞鍍金。
清末銅價劇漲，民間毀錢為銅，以獲數倍之利，市面出現錢荒。廣東因停鑄制錢，市面制錢日乏，小額流通十分不便。為救錢荒，同時受香港銅元及外幣影響，光緒26年6月，兩廣總督德壽與前總督李鴻章奏準廣東仿香港銅仙鑄造機制銅元。由兩廣總督張之洞率先引進英國鑄幣機器鑄造銀元和銅元，之后各省紛紛仿效。共有十九個省局鑄造，除中央戶部，地方省所鑄銅元，皆在其正面上緣鐫寫省名。故清代機制銅元的鑄造由廣東伊始。繼而福建、江蘇、光緒元寶銅幣四川等省相繼仿鑄銅元。
隨著近些年古銀元市場火熱異常，不少銀元身價都成倍上漲，有袁大頭銀、大清銀幣等等，根據業內人士分析，清代銀元多年來一直程穩步上升的趨勢，隨著珍品幣在拍賣市場的陸續出現，更多的收藏人士開始關注近代銀幣收藏，清代銀元的市場價格也出現快速提升的勢態，銀元收藏將會再起熱點。其中光緒元寶更是不少收藏愛好者的首選，而光緒元寶中雙龍壽字幣也頻頻賣出天價。
此枚光緒元寶，錢幣正面分為內圈和外圈兩部分，以珠圈為界，內圈印刻著滿漢文“光緒元寶”四個大字，外圈則分為頂部和底部兩大部分。頂部刻有“廣東省造”四個楷體字，底部則是這枚錢幣當時的幣值——“庫平重壹兩”，左右兩側各鑄一蝙蝠圖案，生動活潑。版面的設計明顯與普通的錢幣略不一般，極其精致，而且確實為藝術品收藏界的罕見珍品。再看錢幣的反面，也是分為內圈和外圈兩大部分，背面珠圈外鑄二龍戲珠圖案，線條優雅，活靈活現，工藝極其精湛，讓人看了贊不絕口；珠圈內鑄一篆體變形“壽”字。銀幣設計極富特色，新穎巧妙，正面兩側所鑄的一對蝙蝠圖案寓意吉祥。因蝙蝠的“蝠”字與“福”字諧音，在幣面上鑄蝙蝠圖案意在取“蝠”、“福”兩字諧音，與背面的“壽”字相對應，寓意“福壽雙全”?？芍^是意蘊深厚，值得藏友們去細細品味。
