“一刀平五千”刀幣，分為環柄和刀身兩部分，環柄為一方孔圓錢，環文上曰“一”，下曰“刀”，字為陰刻，字陷處填以黃金，并且加以打磨，使字面與錢面平齊。刀身上鑄有陽文“平五千”三字，其中“平”是“值”的意思，即表示一枚刀幣價值等于五千。值得注意的是，這枚刀幣的造型獨具韻味，絲毫未拘泥于春秋戰國時代刀幣形制，彼時尖首刀形制。古拙穩重，并透露出秀美氣息。幣面銘文“一刀平五千”五字書寫流暢，氣勢生動，毫不呆滯，承襲了戰國時期幣面銘文“一筆過”的特征，新莽錢幣，錢文纖細，工藝講究，錢幣版別較多，但錢文大體以懸針篆為主，文體有精有粗，粗者文字平夷，制作較遜，精者輪廓斜削，筆劃細挺。
