明光宗未鑄錢，因其在位僅數月，未及鑄錢，其子明熹宗于天啟元年先補鑄其父年號“泰昌”錢，稱“泰昌通寶”。此錢為小平錢，真書直讀，銅色淡紅，也有黃銅錢，版本不多，有背月，背星錢，還有錢徑達2.9厘米，大如折二錢的寬郭大樣錢；也有錢徑2.3-2.4厘米的小錢。明熹宗鑄泰昌通寶錢只一年，次年便開鑄“天啟通寶”，同年設立了戶部寶泉局，稱“錢法堂”，從此由戶部主管鑄錢。所鑄錢幣主要用于軍需，軍隊的鑄錢爐只保留西北三鎮，東南的一律取消，這時全國形成了三個造幣中心，分別為兩京及四川地區，但天啟三年（公元1628年），宦官魏忠賢專權，宦官亂政，濫鑄情況又出現，地方錢局大量出現，因此所鑄的天啟錢版本極多，差異大。錢背文大量的出現記地，記局，記重等形式。此前僅萬歷時期出現過，但版本有限。所以明朝錢幣制式的復雜時期是從天啟年間開始的。天啟年為了彌補財政的虧空，繼以往的方法，仍采用增加鑄錢量來解決。
