機制鑄造銅元始于清光緒二十六年（1900年）。當時，任兩廣總督的李鴻章，為了緩解錢荒，率先下令在廣東試鑄新式無孔銅元。而江南省造光緒元寶是指清代光緒二十三年至三十一年(1897-1905年)鑄造的光緒元寶系列銀幣。作為我國貨幣史上唯一有名無實的省份銀幣，共計有九種年別：老江南、戊戌、己亥、庚子、辛丑、壬寅、癸卯、甲辰及乙巳等，最初鑄造的銀幣上沒有干支年度的，俗稱老江南。爾后自光緒二十四年歲次“戊戌”開始注明，一直到歲次“乙巳”止。
