隕石(meteorite)也稱"隕星",是地球以外脫離原有運行軌道的宇宙流星或塵碎塊飛快散落到地球或其它行星表面的未燃盡的石質、鐵質或是石鐵混合的物質。因為隕石是外太空的來物,隕石確定真假是需要儀器鑒定的,肉眼只有輔助的作用。大多數隕石來自于火星和木星間的小行星帶,小部分來自月球和火星。隕石大體可分為石質隕石、鐵質隕石,石鐵混合隕石。隕石的平均密度在3~3.5之間,主要成分是硅酸鹽。隕鐵密度為 7.5~8.0,主要由鐵、鎳組成。隕鐵石成分介于兩者之間,密度在5.5~6.0間。
