崇寧重寶系北宋徽宗崇寧年間鑄(公元1102年~1106年)，幣質(zhì)有銅、鐵、銀。 崇寧重寶為隸書銅、鐵大錢，制作多亦精好，存世較多。崇寧重寶錢文隸書，古樸方正，嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)莊重，法度固定。有人認(rèn)為，崇寧重寶錢文也是徽宗所書，但史無定論。重寶版別幾百種，面背記號(hào)多，有花穿、決文、面星、背星月紋等，常能見到。 關(guān)于此錢，有一個(gè)傳說，謂其面文為蔡京所書，而蔡京書寫時(shí)別有用心地將“崇”字的山和宗的豎筆上下貫通，連成一線;將“寧”字繁體之中的“心”省略，被人指責(zé)為“有意破宋，無心寧國(guó)”。“崇寧”錢存世尚多，版別亦多，但迄今并未發(fā)現(xiàn)有如上所說這種寫法的錢幣。自然也有根據(jù)以上說法造假的，但那很容易辨別出來。因此這段傳說得不到印證，至今仍是一個(gè)謎。 公元1100年1月，北宋皇帝哲宗病故，由其弟趙佶接替做了北宋第八任皇帝，為宋徽宗。徽宗“性甚機(jī)巧，優(yōu)于技藝”，終日沉迷于書法繪畫，不理朝綱。他在位25年，先后鑄造了圣宋通寶、崇寧重寶(通寶)、大觀通寶、政和通寶(重寶)、重和通寶、宣和通寶(元寶)等6種錢幣。
