1916年6月6日,袁世凱病死，次日，黎元洪按規定正式受任中華民國大總統，12月9日,漢口銀根再次吃緊,湖北商務總會呈請湖北督軍王占元設法救濟，12月20日，武昌造幣廠援引1912年南京財政部總廠開鑄第一期大總統孫中山像開國紀念幣的先例，奉命鑄造新任大總統黎元洪像“新”銀幣。

此枚紀念幣品相保存完好，其包漿自然，不論是文字還是圖案，都顯得自然細膩，深淺合適。錢幣正面中央珠圈內鑄黎元洪戎裝肖像，珠圈外上鐫“中華民國”四個字，下鐫“開國紀念幣”五個字，珠圈外左右兩側各鑄五瓣梅花各一枝。錢幣的背面珠圈內中央鐫豎寫“壹圓”二字，托以嘉禾圖，左右各一枝，每枝一穗三葉。珠圈外上環為英文“THE REPUBLIC OE CHINA”，下環為英文“ONE DOLLAR”，兩側偏下各鐫一個五角星。黎元洪在位僅一年，其正版幣極其稀少，極為珍稀，非常難得。
