大清銅幣,學名清代機制銅圓,鑄造始于1900年(清光緒二十六年),止于1911年(宣統三年)。鑄造流通時間盡管只有十余年,但其鼎盛時期全國共有十七省二十局開機鑄造銅圓。十七二十局先后鑄造的當十銅圓,各不相同,版式繁多。僅以明顯區別劃分,其版式亦有數百種之多。如以細微區別劃分,其版式在千種以上。因此當代銅圓收藏愛好者每每以搜尋不同版式的銅圓為最大樂事。清代機制銅圓版式繁多,尤以當十者為最。清代末期開機鑄造銅圓的十七省二十局,無一不鑄造當十銅圓,而二文、五文、二十文銅圓則僅有部分省局鑄造。故本文所列銅圓收藏方法,僅就當十銅圓而言。

光緒二十六年(1900),李鴻章奏準在廣東開鑄銅元。清銅元主要分為兩大類,在先的一類幣面書“光緒元寶”,在后的一類幣面書“大清銅幣”。除廣東外,先后開鑄的廠局還有福建、湖北、四川、清江等20余局。四川是銅元鑄造大省,光緒二十九年(1903)至民國六年(1917)十二月,成都和重慶兩個官方廠所鑄銅元數量位居全國之冠。
