民國建立后，中央財政幾乎有出無入，財政危機十分嚴重。從短期來說，發行紙幣亦不失為斂財妙法，只是紙幣是銀元的代表者，是兌換券，若沒有銀元的充分準備和廣泛流通，紙幣信用亦難確立。此時此刻，幣制改革已是刻不容緩———“袁大頭”銀元正是基于此而誕生的，也是銀元發展的必然結果。經過多年鑄造，加上其信譽很高，“袁大頭”數量增多，流通漸廣，雖僻處邊陬，也有其蹤跡。“袁大頭”銀元的通行促進了銀元的統一，也為“廢兩改元”準備了條件。袁世凱頭像銀幣是中華民國財政部于民國三年(1914年)二月頒布《國幣條例》統一貨幣制度后，北洋軍閥政府正式鑄造的，因幣上鑄有袁世凱側身頭像，故民間俗稱“袁大頭”，由于其銀兩分量足、信譽好，成為民國時期乃至往后更長時間中國各地大量使用的通行貨幣。
1931年，國民黨反動派對蘇區進行軍事圍剿和經濟封鎖，紅色政權對敵斗爭環境十分惡劣，為了適應對敵斗爭形勢的需要，紅軍便在從打土豪繳獲來的民國三年“袁大頭”舊銀元上，在袁世凱頭像右側打上了“蘇維埃”的戳記，為我所用，以示區別，用來發展革命根據地經濟，保障紅軍供給和紅色政權建設。而國民黨曾將不少蓋有“蘇維埃”的銀元回爐重鑄，因此蓋有“蘇維埃”戳的“袁大頭”并不多見，具有一定的收藏價值。
此枚中華民國三年袁大頭蘇維埃版，藏品雖然經歷了無窮歲月的洗禮，但是如今保存依然較為完好。其色澤光鮮自然，紋飾深淺適度，邊緣線條粗細均勻，間距也疏密一致。人像、發絲、胡須、穗芒等細微之處清晰有度，生動自然。民國三年“袁大頭”正面為袁世凱五分側面像，右側刻著“蘇維埃”，上列“中華民國三年”六字，背面兩條嘉禾，左右交互，下系結帶，中鑄‘壹圓’二字。即使是“百年高齡”，但是仍然保存完整，品相較好。它是一枚具有很高收藏價值的精品銀元。

On the right, I stamped "Soviet" on the right side of Yuan Shikai's head, which was used by me to show the difference. It was used to develop the economy of the revolutionary base area, and to guarantee the supply of the Red Army and the construction of the Red Regime. The Kuomintang once recast many silver dollars covered with "Soviet", so "Yuan Datou" stamped with "Soviet" stamps are rare and have a certain collection value.
This three-year-old Soviet version of the Yuan head of the Republic of China, although the collection has experienced the baptism of infinite years, it is still relatively well preserved. The color is bright and natural, the depth of the pattern is moderate, the thickness of the edge is uniform, and the spacing is uniform. Portraits, hair, beards, spikes, etc. are subtle and clear, vivid and natural. In the three years of the Republic of China, the "Yuan Datou" has a five-point profile of Yuan Shikai on the front, with the "Soviet" engraved on the right, and the words "Three Years of the Republic of China" on the right.
