最早的天然天珠是由海螺化石打磨而成，后來由于化石的稀缺，古西藏人開始采用一種含玉質(zhì)及瑪瑙成分的沉積巖打磨天珠，這種沉積巖有極強的磁場，天然形成的規(guī)則圖案，以眼球為主，輔以三角形、四邊形等，據(jù)稱可辟邪。琢磨后的成品凸顯眼球妝紋飾，是價格無法估量的佛教圣物。再后來由于九眼石頁巖的稀缺，西藏古人開始模仿沉積巖的圖案采用草藥配置顏色在瑪瑙上人工繪制天珠，之后高溫燒制。
