在中國(guó)民間，陰沉木即炭化木，蜀人稱之為烏木，西方人稱之為“東方神木”。陰沉木的形成久遠(yuǎn)，據(jù)可考資料記載：遠(yuǎn)古時(shí)期，原始森林中的百年千年名貴古木，由于遭受到突如其來的重大的地理、氣象變化（如地震、山洪、雷擊、臺(tái)風(fēng)等），有的被深埋于江河湖泊的古河床、泥沙之下，有的被埋藏在缺氧的陰暗地層中，時(shí)間長(zhǎng)達(dá)數(shù)千年，甚至幾萬年，它們歷經(jīng)激流沖刷、泥石碾壓、魚啄蟹棲，以致形狀各異，姿態(tài)萬千。經(jīng)大自然千年磨蝕造化，陰沉木兼?zhèn)淠镜墓叛藕褪纳耥崳滟|(zhì)地堅(jiān)實(shí)厚重，色彩烏黑華貴，斷面柔滑細(xì)膩，且木質(zhì)油性大、耐潮、有香味，萬年不腐不朽、不怕蟲蛀，渾然天成。古籍中記載個(gè)別樹種還具有藥用價(jià)值。它集“瘦、透、漏、皺”的特性于一身，不愧享有 “東方神木”和“植物木乃伊”的美譽(yù)。

陰沉木自古以來就被視為名貴木材，稀有之物，是尊貴及地位的象征。我國(guó)民間素有“縱有珠寶一箱，不如烏木一方”和“黃金萬兩送地府，換來烏木祭天靈”的民諺。在古代，達(dá)官顯貴、文人雅士皆把陰沉木家具及出自陰沉木雕刻的藝術(shù)品視為傳家、鎮(zhèn)宅之寶，辟邪之物。歷代以來，特別是明、清時(shí)期，陰沉木尤其成為各代帝王建筑宮殿和制作棺木的首選之材。清代帝王更將其列為皇室專用之材，民間不可私自采用，致使陰沉木更加稀少。民國(guó)時(shí)的竊國(guó)大盜袁世凱，逆歷史潮流而動(dòng)，“皇帝夢(mèng)”沒做多久就一命嗚呼。但為了顯示曾有過帝王身份，其家人費(fèi)盡心思，耗費(fèi)大量家財(cái)覓得陰沉木，為其拼了一副棺木。這雖是歷史笑談，但從中也看出了陰沉木的貴在難求。

This is a historical joke, but it also shows that the price of gloomy wood is hard to find.
嚴(yán)格說來，陰沉木已超出了木頭的范圍，而應(yīng)將之列為“珍寶”的范疇。這是因?yàn)椋诠蕦m博物院的“珍寶苑”就珍藏有陰沉木雕刻而成的巧奪天工的藝術(shù)品，可見其珍貴的程度已遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)不是一般木頭所能企及的。陰沉木家具及藝術(shù)品就其質(zhì)地、文化價(jià)值和升值前景看，可以說是無與倫比的，甚至已經(jīng)超過了名貴的紫檀木。
