光緒三十年(1904年)湖北銀元局鑄行了四種版式的『光緒三十年湖北省造大清銀幣庫平一兩』。當時清廷中主張以“兩”為銀幣單位的“后黨”(以慈禧太后為首)和主張以“圓”為銀幣單位的“帝黨”(以光緒帝為首)正就銀幣以“兩”或是以“圓”為單位各持己見。
In the 30th year of Guangxu (1904), Hubei Silver Dollar Bureau cast four formats of "One or two silver coins made in Qing Dynasty in Hubei Province in the 30th year of Guangxu". At that time, the "late party" (headed by Empress Dowager Cixi) and the "Emperor Party" (headed by Emperor Guangxu), who advocated "two" as the unit of silver coins, held their own opinions on whether silver coins were "two" or "round".
有著豐富政治智慧的時任湖廣總督張之洞深知“一兩銀幣”在實際流通使用中的不便和“壹圓型銀幣”的便利性，在湖北省銀元局開鑄了實重庫平一兩和實重庫平七錢二分共四種版式的光緒三十年湖北省造大清銀幣。
Zhang Zhidong, then Governor of Huguang with rich political wisdom, knew the inconvenience of "one or two silver coins" in actual circulation and the convenience of "one round silver coins", and opened and cast the silver coins made in Hubei Province in four formats, namely, real weight Kuping one or two and real weight Kuping seven money and two cents.
1904年光緒三十年湖北銀圓局正式改名銀幣局，開鑄新銀元。湖北省壹兩正面中央銘文“大清銀幣”，是中國最早有“大清銀幣”字樣的銀幣。上緣“光緒三十年湖北省造”，下方刻“庫平一兩”。背面為雙龍戲珠，中央面值“壹兩”，外緣上下為英文。依大清銀幣四字之大小，分為大小字兩版。模具由日本大阪造幣廠制作。
In 1904, in the 30th year of Guangxu, Hubei Silver Dollar Bureau officially changed its name to Silver Dollar Bureau, and opened a new silver dollar. The central inscription "Qing Silver Coin" on one or two fronts in Hubei Province is the earliest silver coin with the word "Qing Silver Coin" in China. The upper edge is "made in Hubei Province in the 30th year of Guangxu", and the lower part is engraved with "Kuping one or two". On the back is Ssangyong Opera Beads, with a central face value of "One Two" and English on the outer edge. According to the size of Qing silver coin, it can be divided into big and small versions. The mold is made by Osaka Mint, Japan.
俗稱“湖北壹兩”是流通銀幣中，除吉林廠平壹兩外唯一的“兩”制銀幣，巧合的是兩者背部皆為雙龍圖案。湖北壹兩推行并不成功，失敗原因主要是制錢與銅元間的兌換基本上是以七錢二分銀元為主，雖然比價每日有所變化，但兩制幣推出并沒有使用上的方便，反而增加困擾。所以現在留存極其少，相當珍罕。
Commonly known as "Hubei Yiliang", it is the only "two" silver coin in circulation except Jilin Factory Pingyiliang. Coincidentally, both of them have double dragon patterns on their backs. Hubei's implementation of "One Two" was unsuccessful. The main reason for the failure was that the exchange between money making and copper coins was basically based on seven money and two silver coins. Although the price comparison changed every day, the implementation of "Two Money Making" did not bring convenience to use, but increased troubles. Therefore, it is extremely rare to retain it now.
此枚錢幣正面上弧形幣道上鐫有“光緒三十年湖北省造”九個漢字，為大清官方標準楷書體(與大清光緒二十五年 奉天機器局造 一兩幣字體相同，還有其他機制幣亦為此標準字體，就不一一列舉) ，中間環形珠圈內鐫刻“大清銀幣”四漢字(珠圈有92顆圓珠，圓珠間隔布局并不十分緊密)，字體較大。下幣道間鐫刻“庫平一兩”四漢字，由此觀之該些漢字亦是由三組不同字體群組所組成。
Nine Chinese characters "made in Hubei Province in the 30th year of Guangxu" are inscribed on the curved coin channel on the front of this coin, which is the official standard regular script of Qing Dynasty (the font is the same as that of one or two coins made by Fengtian Machine Bureau in the 25th year of Guangxu in Qing Dynasty, and other mechanism coins are also the standard fonts, so they are not listed one by one), and four Chinese characters "silver coins of Qing Dynasty" are inscribed in the middle annular bead ring (there are 92 beads in the bead ring, and the spacing of the beads is not very close), and the font is larger. Four Chinese characters, "Kuping One Two", are engraved in the lower currency channel, which shows that these Chinese characters are also composed of three different font groups.
錢幣背面不論是圖案及漢文、英文、滿文上均有清晰之珠圈來防偽，且有許多不同的特征；銀餅刷痕清晰，并有許多游絲般縱橫定位線段。上幣道上鐫刻“HU-PEH PROVINCE”13個英文字樣。鑄工精美，版底平整，呈均勻一色包漿，保存頗佳。極具收藏價值！
There are clear beads on the back of coins, both in Chinese, English and Manchu, and there are many different characteristics; Silver cake brush marks are clear, and there are many hairspring-like vertical and horizontal positioning line segments. There are 13 English words "Hu-peh province" engraved on the coin channel. The caster is exquisite, the bottom of the plate is flat, and it is evenly coated with slurry, which is well preserved.
