據相關史料記載，清代咸豐皇帝登基后，即開鑄“咸豐通寶”制錢。其時，由于戰爭以及列強的掠奪和太平天國革命運動的發生，清朝的軍費開支大增，而稅收入大減，導致財政拮據。

該枚咸豐元寶當百。形制規整，大小合適，包漿老道，銹色自然，歲月流痕鮮明，流通使用痕跡明顯，歷史過渡性自然，為錢幣珍品。錢幣正面為漢文“咸豐元寶”四字，直讀；背面上下穿漢文“當百”，左右穿滿文鑄局。
