史料記載：光緒十六年（1890年）,廣東省率先引進外國鑄幣手藝，先機制以“光緒元寶”為名的銀元，是清朝光緒年間流通的貨幣之一。由湖北兩廣總督張之洞率先引進英國鑄幣機器鑄造。光緒年間鑄造了一系列銀幣。
