天珠一詞源自20世紀(jì)80年代中國改革開放以后，臺灣商人將西藏地區(qū)廣為流傳有著悠久歷史文化藏民稱為“瑟”的寶石飾品推廣到世界各地以及中國大陸地區(qū)，為了便于不同文化領(lǐng)域的人民理解西藏地區(qū)這一古老的寶石，根據(jù)在藏區(qū)人們將“瑟”珠又稱為“天降石”的習(xí)俗，便將這種西藏地區(qū)獨(dú)有的寶石“瑟”（ZI）譯為“天珠”，并根據(jù)藏區(qū)各種關(guān)于“瑟”珠的傳說賦予“天珠”各種吉祥的名稱與寓意，“天珠”一詞由此開始廣泛流傳至今。天珠又分天然天珠與人造天珠兩類，在藏區(qū)流傳的關(guān)于天珠的各種神奇?zhèn)髡f的天珠為天然天珠。

天珠——天珠藏語發(fā)音“zi”漢語譯“斯”或“瑟”，藏民稱為“天降石” ，是珍貴的寶石和護(hù)身符，是治療血疾的特效藥，在民間流傳諸多富有神秘色彩的傳說，這些傳說涵蓋了宗教、歷史、天文、 地理、醫(yī)學(xué)等各個(gè)方面，人們在這些領(lǐng)域都能尋獲天珠的影子，然而任何一個(gè)領(lǐng)域都無法詮釋天珠，謎一樣的身世困擾了一代又一代人。 天珠在苯教文獻(xiàn)記載源自古象雄時(shí)期，是原始苯教法師的法器，通過埋藏于地的形式傳承，在公元7世紀(jì)前因古象雄王朝的神秘消失而沒有留下文字記載，只有傳說。在古老的史詩《格薩爾》中記載“在松石和 瑪瑙的寶匣中，裝藏著大睛有翼天珠。首先獻(xiàn)給地神父輩們，再給諸內(nèi)臣八十位。每人分得一百珠，征服阿扎斯宗堡，建立十八國”。。。。。 “百顆白色天珠以五彩哈達(dá)飾之，獻(xiàn)做欲界天神之天珠。百顆花色天珠以龍之哈達(dá)飾之，獻(xiàn)做藍(lán)色龍之天珠。在藏地的邊那日扎，在漢地的峨嵋山，在多堆的瑪積雪山等地各裝藏百顆上品天珠，以天珠之殊勝，愿每百珠培植千萬新珠。天珠寶藏在藏地，愿有緣者找到它們，愿有福者來聚集，愿善緣者得到它們”。在意伏藏格薩爾王的傳記中，清楚的記載了格薩爾王開啟并埋藏天珠伏藏時(shí)所發(fā)的誓愿：“愿天珠聚集于本尊和上師的手中，愿護(hù)法神守護(hù)天珠，直到有福德的弟子來臨時(shí)再交付到此人手中。”
