紫檀雕刻從選材到完工非常細致,需要經過烘干、開料、鎪鋸加工組裝、手工砸膘、雕刻、清地、打磨、打蠟等多個環節。紫檀雕刻是個細活單是各種刀具總共就有百余種每一種都有特定的用途.在處理好的紫檀木料上,雕刻師先畫好圖,然后按照圖案一點點鑿開。一般一件雕刻的完成,少則一兩個月、多則數年,沒有耐心是做不好的。打磨師分別用粗細兩種紗布反反復復地打磨雕刻好的粗坯,最后再用節節草進一步磨亮,直到暗淡的木頭反射出光芒,打磨才算結束。

紫檀是珍惜物種,生長周期非常漫長,每百年才長粗大約三厘米,近千年方能成材,紫檀的樹皮呈灰綠色,樹干彎曲不直,因此很難取到大直徑的木材,它的邊材狹窄,木質堅硬,內部結構緊密,密度大落水即沉,心材呈鮮紅色或是桔紅色,長期暴露于空氣中后顏色會變深,出現紫紅褐色的條紋。紫檀主要還可分為大葉紫檀和小葉紫檀,小葉紫檀的木紋較淺,色澤鮮麗,年輪幾乎微不可見,木質細膩,材質優良。
