1912年4月袁世凱出任大總統。北洋政府鑒于當時鑄幣、紙幣十分復雜，流通的中外貨幣在百種以上，規格不一，流通混亂，折算繁瑣，民眾積怨，同時也想借助貨幣改制以解決軍費問題，便決定鑄發國幣。袁世凱為了提高自己的統治地位，把他的頭像鑄于幣面，“袁大頭”由此而來。
袁大頭學名“袁世凱像背嘉禾壹圓銀幣”，是民國初期袁世凱出任大總統后統一幣制發行的貨幣，該幣反面為嘉禾圖案，亦泛指生長茁壯的禾稻，古人視為吉祥的征兆，雕刻于錢幣之上有有國泰民安、吉祥如意之愿景。

“袁大頭”版本眾多，其中最珍稀、最寶貴的的品種當屬民國三年袁世凱頭像“簽字版”（幣面右側方有英文款識）。之所以稱它為簽字版，是因為這枚幣在袁世凱像右側，刻有一行英文字母“L.GIORGI”，是在華外籍鑄幣專家意大利雕刻師“魯爾治-喬治”簽名縮寫。此版也就是為了紀念袁世凱銀元刻模的雕刻專家魯爾治喬治，故在袁像右側刻有此人簽名“L.GIORGI”。由天津造幣廠試鑄，并未流通，當時發行量不過萬枚，流傳至今存世量極其稀少非常珍貴。
