1912年4月袁世凱出任大總統(tǒng)。北洋政府鑒于當(dāng)時(shí)鑄幣、紙幣十分復(fù)雜，流通的中外貨幣在百種以上，規(guī)格不一，流通混亂，折算繁瑣，民眾積怨，同時(shí)也想借助貨幣改制以解決軍費(fèi)問(wèn)題，便決定鑄發(fā)國(guó)幣。袁世凱為了提高自己的統(tǒng)治地位，把他的頭像鑄于幣面，“袁大頭”由此而來(lái)。
袁大頭學(xué)名“袁世凱像背嘉禾壹圓銀幣”，是民國(guó)初期袁世凱出任大總統(tǒng)后統(tǒng)一幣制發(fā)行的貨幣，該幣反面為嘉禾圖案，亦泛指生長(zhǎng)茁壯的禾稻，古人視為吉祥的征兆，雕刻于錢幣之上有有國(guó)泰民安、吉祥如意之愿景。
Yuan Tou is known as the treasure of silver COINS in the field of currency collection. Yuan's scientific name "Yuan Shikai is like the back of jiahe one dollar silver coin", which was issued by the unified currency system after Yuan Shikai became President in the early period of the Republic of China. The reverse side of the coin is the pattern of Jiahe, which also generally refers to the growing and healthy rice. The ancients regarded it as a sign of auspicities, and engraved on the coin a vision of prosperity, peace and good fortune.
“袁大頭”版本眾多，其中最珍稀、最寶貴的的品種當(dāng)屬民國(guó)三年袁世凱頭像“簽字版”（幣面右側(cè)方有英文款識(shí)）。之所以稱它為簽字版，是因?yàn)檫@枚幣在袁世凱像右側(cè)，刻有一行英文字母“L.GIORGI”，是在華外籍鑄幣專家意大利雕刻師“魯爾治-喬治”簽名縮寫。此版也就是為了紀(jì)念袁世凱銀元刻模的雕刻專家魯爾治喬治，故在袁像右側(cè)刻有此人簽名“L.GIORGI”。由天津造幣廠試鑄，并未流通，當(dāng)時(shí)發(fā)行量不過(guò)萬(wàn)枚，流傳至今存世量極其稀少非常珍貴。
