中國銅元始鑄于清光緒二十六年(1900年)。河南銅元始鑄于光緒三十年。是年，河南巡撫陳夔龍奏準在開封設銅元局。光緒三十二年，開封銅元局改名為度支部造幣汴廠，至光緒三十三年，月造額達48萬枚。后清政府限制鑄額，規定河南月造銅元30萬枚。

至光緒三十四年二月，河南造幣廠共造十文銅元2.3億枚。民國初年，控制河南的軍閥督撫為支付巨額的軍政開支，銅元鑄造數額驟增。民國二十年(1931年)，河南銅元局改名機器制造局，至民國二十二年秋，因銅源斷絕，造幣機構被撤銷。
