為適應經(jīng)濟發(fā)展和市場貨幣流通的要求，1999年10月1日，在中華人民共和國建國50周年之際，中國人民銀行陸續(xù)發(fā)行第五套人民幣（1999年版）。第五套人民幣共有1元、5元、10元、20元、50元、100元6種面額，其中1元有紙幣、硬幣2種。
第五套人民幣繼承了中國印制技術的傳統(tǒng)經(jīng)驗，借鑒了國外鈔票設計的先進技術，在防偽性能和適應貨幣處理現(xiàn)代化方面有了較大提高。各面額貨幣正面均采用毛澤東主席建國初期的頭像，底襯采用了中國著名花卉圖案，背面主景圖案通過選用有代表性的寓有民族特色的圖案，充分表現(xiàn)了中國悠久的歷史和壯麗的山河，弘揚了中國偉大的民族文化。
