袁世凱（1859年9月16日－1916年6月6日），字慰亭（又作慰庭），號容庵，漢族，河南項城人，是中國近代史上著名的政治人物。曾是北洋軍閥的領導人，在辛亥革命后，與南方革命軍有約，只要推翻清帝奉袁世凱為大總統，袁世凱履行承諾，逼宣統退位。成為中華民國首任大總統，后復辟稱帝被推翻。他曾擔任過滿清王朝的軍機大臣、駐朝鮮的代理總督。

1912年4月袁世凱出任大總統。北洋政府鑒于當時鑄幣、紙幣十分復雜，流通的中外貨幣在百種以上，規格不一，流通混亂，折算繁瑣，民眾積怨，同時也想借助貨幣改制以解決軍費問題，便決定鑄發國幣。袁世凱為了提高自己的統治地位，趁機把他的頭像鑄于幣面，“袁大頭”由此而來。
