唐繼堯（1883年8月14日-1927年5月23日 [1] ），又名榮昌，字蓂賡，云南會澤縣城關人。滇軍創始人與領導者，滇系軍閥首領。就讀東京振武學校，然后入日本陸軍士官學校，后升入日本陸軍士官學校第六期深造。
民國四年十二月，袁世凱稱帝，云南都督府唐繼堯和蔡鍔將軍率先發動護國起義，組織護國軍誓師討袁，全國響應。袁世凱被迫于民國五年三月二十二日宣布取消帝制。同年五月八日，護國軍在廣東肇慶成立軍務院，推舉唐繼堯為撫軍長，岑春煊為撫軍副長，梁啟超為政務軍委員長，陸榮廷、蔡鍔、李立鈞、劉顯世、陳炳昆等為撫軍，遙遵黎元洪為大總統。六月，袁死，黎元洪繼任大總統，宣布遵行臨時約法，召開國會。七月，軍務院宣告撤消。從上述歷史事實中可以看出，唐繼堯錢幣是民國五年之后制造的，唐繼堯不可能在民國元年或民國四年預先料到自己要擔任軍務長一職從而先行制造紀念幣。

唐繼堯錢幣是云南省為紀念反袁擁護共和勝利而制造發行的，是民國時期云南省主要的流通貨幣之一。據《云南近代貨幣史資料匯編》記載，云南造幣廠曾于民國六年八月奉督軍、省長公署之令鑄造唐繼堯紀念幣，后因“模型未臻完美，不便多鑄”，致使此幣停鑄，如今流傳甚少。
唐軍長是幣界的俗稱，實際是唐繼堯紀念幣，云南省造，正面為唐繼堯正像或側像，上銘“軍務院撫軍長唐”，正像幣下有嘉禾，側像幣則無。因從左至右讀為唐軍長比較順口，于是這個稱謂一直流傳下來。背面正中為交叉的雙旗（五色旗和十八星旗），上銘“擁護共和紀念”，下面是三錢六分記重面值（即5角）。圖為正像幣正面。唐繼堯紀念幣還有金、銅幣多個品種，當時在云南地區發行量很大。
